The background to the battle
Allah’s apostle had preached his message of Islam in Mecca from 613 to 622. He had attracted just a small community of followers; however he equally had succeeded in driving the rest of the Quraysh to anger. Following years of oppression and in 622 the Muslims fled Mecca and settled themselves at Medina. They considered themselves to be in a state of war with Mecca and raided Meccan caravans. The Meccans sent out a small army to penalize and stop the Muslims raid.
The Meccan force
the Meccans wanted revenge especially after their losses at the Battle of Badr and during the next year they raised another force of 3000 member. This force was under the leadership of Abu Sufyan. Instead of attacking Medina itself they camped on the oasis, waiting for the Muslims to come out to meet them.
The Muslim battle plan
At the Muslim conference of war, Many Muslim voices urged Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to attack the Meccans. He felt that it would be more secure to stay in the center of the oasis and take advantage of the heavily fortified grounds there and he bowed to the Muslims wishes and got them ready for the battle.
On late Friday, a group of about 1000 soldiers circled the Meccan forces and by the next morning, they set themselves on a low position on the hill of Uhud. The Meccan forces were spread amidst Muslims forces and the city center and they were under the leadership of Khalid ibn al-Walid . They savagely attacked the Muslim flank and rear. After fierce combats, most of the Muslims managed to withdraw to their original position on the hill.
The battle's aftermath
Allah’s apostle and the Muslims buried the dead on the battlefieldand went back home. The Meccans retired for the evening at a place called Hamra al-Asad. The next morning, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent out a small force to hurry the Meccan army on their way home. It was in a way or another a show of force to speed their retirement from Medina.
