Masjid al-Qiblatain

Masjid al-Qiblatain is situated in Medina . It is the Mosque where Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) received a revelation to change the direction of prayer (qibla) from Jerusalem to Mecca when he was leading a prayer. The Mosque has got two unique prayer niches (mihrabs). Masjid al-Qiblatain was recently renewed to remove the old prayer niche which faced Jerusalem and leaving the one facing Mecca.

Allah’s apostle (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was leading the prayer when he received a revelation from Allah ordering him to take the Ka’abah as a direction to prayer .

We have seen you turning your face about the sky (searching for the right direction). We now assign a Qiblah that is pleasing to you. Henceforth, you shall turn your face towards the Sacred Masjid. Wherever you may be, all of you shall turn your faces towards it. Those who received the previous scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. GOD is never unaware of anything they do. (Al-Qur'an 2:144)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to face Jerusalem when praying, however; after this revelation he changed the direction of prayer to face Mecca. Similarly, his companions did so and obeyed his instructions.
