The Treaty of Hudaybiyya

When prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on his way to Mecca to perform Umrah with his followers he was prevented from entering Mecca in the year 628 by the Quraysh tribe.

Muslims stopped North Mecca in a place called Hudaybiyya and instead of fighting the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a message to the Quraysh that he wanted only to perform Tawaf, sacrifice the animals and return back to Medina with his followers. But the tribe disagreed.

Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  ordered Umar bin al Khattab to go to Mecca and meet the Quraysh tribe but he refused and Uthman was sent to Mecca instead of him.

The Quraysh tribe welcomed him and told him that he could perform Umrah but he said that he could not perform it alone and that the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) along with his companions must be allowed to enter Mecca so that they could perform Umrah. Unfortunately, Uthman’s suggestion was refused and he was arrested.

Hearing such a news Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose to peacefully settle the issue and he signed a treaty with the Quraysh tribe.

We have not come to fight anyone, but to perform the Umrah. Undoubtedly, the war has weakened Quraish and they have suffered great losses, so if they wish, I will conclude a truce with them, during which they should refrain from interfering between me and the people, and if I have victory over those infidels, Quraish will get the opportunity to embrace Islam as the other people do, if they wish; they will at least get strong enough to fight. But if they do not accept the truce, by Allah in Whose Hands my life is, I will fight with them defending my Cause till I get killed, but (I am sure) Allah will definitely make His Cause victorious. (Bikhari)

This treaty was called the treaty of Hudaybiyya and it included peace clauses between Muslims not to be violated for ten years. However, just two years later Quraysh broke the treaty and attacked Muslims.
