Two South African Hajj pilgrims undertook the Hajj trip by bicycles
Published in 30.10.10

Nathim Cairncross, 28 years old, and Imtiyaz Ahmad Haron, 25, two young South Africans who decided to travel on their bicycles to the holy sites to perform Hajj 2010 have arrived in Saudi Arabia. They left Cape on February 7th and pedaled through different countries until reaching the Saudi borders.

Cairncross and Haron pedaled through a number of African countries; Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, to name but a few and equally Arab countries as Syria and Jordan before reaching Saudi Arabia where they will perform Islam's fifth pillar. Cairncross said that they are in the Kingdom to perform Hajj for the first time and that they could have travelled by plane, and that they chose to travel by bicycle for it was their desire.

The adventurers pedaled from 80 to 100 km daily and used to relax in mosques or tents to resume their trip after dawn.  Telling their story they said that they received assistance and were welcomed at every place that passed through and that they encountered problems related to language.

The two students of the Islamic sacred law (Sharia) were welcomed by Saudi security officials and greeted for undertaking this nine-month trip.

Luxury hotels in Mecca were full for Hajj
Luxury hotels around the Grand Mosque in Mecca were running full for this year's Hajj despite hundreds of new rooms opening. "Makkah Hilton & Towers were a sell-out for the month surrounding Hajj," said Shuja Zaidi, the hotel's general manager and vice president for Hilton Worldwide projects in Saudi Arabia. "We had expected rates to be lower than in 2010 due to the increased supply of hotel rooms in and around the Haram." But demand exceeded supply and rates remained "in line" with last year.
