According to the head of Kafa Welfare Society ; Mr. Abdullah Sirouji , More than 600 smokers of various nationalities pledged to quit smoking while standing at the gates of the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
The society has got a mobile clinic that assists smokers to quit smoking. It is a large truck equipped with eight beds and six chairs along with the X-ray and a variety of medical equipment.
Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper has reported Abdullah Sirouji saying that “The smokers made their solemn pledge at the gates of the Grand Mosque. An 80-year-old man was among them too. Many of them handed their cigarette packs to the members of the society,”.
He said that more than 400,000 visits have been paid to the clinic since the starting of its work .The clinic is situated near the Haram. He added to say that the society was given this location through coordination with the Mecca municipality, the traffic police and the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs.
The two holy cities, Mecca and Medina, have been declared no-smoking zones by the Saudi Health Ministry. Cigarettes are not sold in both of them.
