Pilgrims can use train this Hajj
Published in 30.07.10

The local pilgrims and those coming from the GCC countries will have the possibility to use trains during the next Hajj season. The new railway project is a good initiative from the Saudi authorities, as trains  will certainly ease overcrowding at the holy sites.

Connecting Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina is the first phase of the rail network. As a result, congestion on the roads will be reduced significantly, in particular, on Arafat Day.

The  number of pilgrims to be transported by the rail network is estimated at 130.000(110.000 from Saudi Arabia and 20.000 from other GCC countries).

“Nine stations are to be constructed in Arafat, Mina and Muzdalifa and will be ready for use by the next Hajj”, the Chairman of a committee of Saudi Haj and Umrah within the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry said.

In its initial phase, the railway network will operate at 35 % of its capacity. The Saudi authorities expect the project will generate  revenues estimated at 11.7 million riyals.

Pilgrims moving around the holy sites in Makkah will have access to escalators and staircases to enable them to reach the rail system( including stations) that is built at elevated locations.

Luxury hotels in Mecca were full for Hajj
Luxury hotels around the Grand Mosque in Mecca were running full for this year's Hajj despite hundreds of new rooms opening. "Makkah Hilton & Towers were a sell-out for the month surrounding Hajj," said Shuja Zaidi, the hotel's general manager and vice president for Hilton Worldwide projects in Saudi Arabia. "We had expected rates to be lower than in 2010 due to the increased supply of hotel rooms in and around the Haram." But demand exceeded supply and rates remained "in line" with last year.
